Love Does: Real Faith in Action

Sermon Recap from James 1:19-27

What a powerful time we had together this past Sunday. The worship set the tone beautifully, reminding us that our sin, every part of it, has been nailed to the cross. We hope this recap encourages you to continue reflecting on God's Word throughout the week.

Summary: The sermon explored James 1:19-27 and the call to authentic, active faith, examining what it truly means to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. Drawing on the theological framework of justification, sanctification, and glorification, the message challenged us to live out our salvation in the everyday moments of life, not simply resting in the past moment of our conversion or looking only toward future glory, but engaging fully in the present process of becoming more like Christ. Love for God and love for others is not passive. It does something. It listens, it acts, it serves, and it keeps its heart pure before God.

Takeaways:

  • Loving leads to listening, and listening leads to peace. James calls us to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. When we quiet ourselves before God and others, we create space for the Holy Spirit to produce shalom in our lives and in our relationships.
  • We are called to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. Reading Scripture is not enough if we walk away unchanged. Just as a person who glances in a mirror and immediately forgets what they saw gains nothing, we must allow God's Word to not only be read by us but to read us, revealing what needs to be confessed, corrected, and surrendered.
  • Pure religion loves people who cannot repay you and keeps your heart unstained from the world. James points to the care of orphans and widows as the mark of genuine faith. True love seeks out those in need without expectation of return. At the same time, we guard our hearts by not becoming entangled in the values and priorities of the world around us. Love God. Love people. These two things, lived out consistently, are the evidence of a faith that is real.

As you go into this week, ask yourself honestly: Am I becoming more like Christ? What is my mouth revealing about the condition of my heart? Who around me needs to be loved in deed and in truth, not just in words? These are not questions meant to produce guilt, but to produce growth. We are all walking by faith and tripping a lot, but the righteous person gets back up and keeps going, trusting that God, who began a good work, is faithful to complete it.

If you do not yet have the assurance of your salvation, or if you have questions about anything from Sunday's message, please do not hesitate to reach out. We would love to talk with you.

Fall Communion

Fall Communion

Sunday, November 8, 2026

Join us for this opportunity to gather together and do what Jesus told us to do. We start the evening with the Love Feast, aftwerward we participate in foot washing, and we end the evening by taking part in the bread and the cup. Throughout the evening we join in singing songs of praise and worship that help us reflect on Jesus' sacrifice and meaning in the three parts of Communion.
